The 1st Jakarta Anniversary Cup 1970

     The 1st Jakarta Anniversary Cup 1970 was hosted by Indonesia and held in Senayan Stadium, Jakarta from 20-28 June 1970. There were six participating teams in this tournament and were divided into two groups. Group A consists of Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore. Then, in Group B consists of Indonesia, Hong Kong and Western Australia. Malaysia won against Singapore with the scores of 5-0 and also won against South Korea with the scores of 1-0. South Korea only won one match against Singapore with the scores of 8-0. In other group, Indonesia won against Hong Kong with the scores of 2-1 and also won against Western Australia with the scores of 3-1. Hong Kong only won one match against Western Australia with the scores of 3-1. After that, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and South Korea qualified to the semi finals. 

     This semi final round held on 26 June 1970 in Senayan Stadium, Jakarta whereby Malaysia vs Hong Kong semi final match gained a big crowd with the 45 000 spectators. In the first half time, Hong Kong led 1-0 with the score from Lai Jin in 29th minute with the 30 yard lob. Luckily, Malaysia managed to score an equalizer one minute before full time from Zulkifli Norbit. Malaysia and Hong Kong has to go for the penalty kicks. Malaysia managed to secure its victory after won the penalty kicks with the scores of 7-6 against Hong Kong. The last penalty kick from Malaysia that knockout Hong Kong was from Zulkifli Norbit. 

     The other semi final match also held in Senayan Stadium, Jakarta on 26 June 1970 whereby Indonesia vs South Korea gained a big attention too as Indonesia was the host country. South Korea first score came from Taik Yi Chun through a penalty kick in the 15th minute. Later, South Korea scored again after 8th minutes through Tang Chong Tai. Indonesia retaliated in the 33rd minutes with a score from Waskito and also in 43rd minutes through Ronny heading score that lead to an equalizer. Indonesia and South Korea has to go for the penalty kicks. South Korea managed to secure its victory after won the penalty kicks with the scores of 6-5 against Indonesia.

    Malaysia and South Korea went into the final match held on 28 Jun 1970. Unexpectedly, Malaysia won against South Korea with the scores of 2-0 in this final match and became the first country who won the 1st Jakarta Anniversary Cup 1970. It was the great moment for Malaysia team under the management of Tan Sri Hamzah Abu Samah and coached by Jalil Che Din. Malaysian players who played for this tournament consists of Redhuan Abdullah, Ibrahim Mydin, Ali Bakar,  Zulkifli Norbit, Shaharuddin Abdullah, Soh Chin Aun, Wong Hee Kok, Ng Kong, Lim Kim Lian, Namat Abdullah, Wong Choon Wah, Ali Othman, Chan Yoong Cheong, Foo Fook Chuan, Teow Seng Ho and others. Indonesia gained third place in this tournament after they won against Hong Kong with the scores of 3-2 in the third place determination match.
